Lancaster city is considering adopting a plan calling for demolition of the Lancaster County Prison after a new prison opens outside the city.
The recommendations in the Lancaster East End Small Area Plan were based on input from residents, but opinions at an open house last week varied between those who see historic value in the castle-like walls and towers, which date to 1851, and those who don’t want a daily reminder of the jail once it’s gone.
“Obviously it’s unique that there’s a castle in the middle of the city, but there are things that it represents. It’s complicated,” said Bryan Glatfelter, who lives less than two blocks from the prison.
County commissioners will have the final say over what happens with the county- owned property. A new facility in Lancaster Township is currently expected to be completed in 2029.
The city’s hope is that the document will inform prospective future owners about what residents want to see on the site.
