Luke Combs became emotional and broke down in tears while performing “Whoever You Turn Out To Be” at the Newport Folk Festival on Sunday (July 26). The country superstar – and father of two sons, Tex, 3 and Beau, who turns 2 in August – got choked up when singing the lyrics, “But you ain’t gotta change the world to make your daddy proud.” After wiping away his tears with a towel and receiving support from the crowd, he composed himself and finished the song. “I remember why we don’t play that one very much,” Combs said afterwards, getting a laugh from the audience. “I apologize,” he added, before quickly clarifying, “I don’t apologize, because I was in the moment there.” The Grammy-nominated musician prioritizes being a father to his young sons over his career, telling People back in May, “I want my kids to know that my job is not more important than they are.” (People)
