Prior to being honored during Variety’s Power of Women: Nashville event, Jessi Alexander spoke with the publication about her journey from fledgling artist to blockbuster country songwriter. Alexander broke gender stereotypes in the Music Row writers’ rooms by penning chart-topping hits like Lee Brice’s “I Drive Your Truck,” Miranda Lambert’s “Things That Break,” Blake Shelton’s “Mine Would Be You,” Morgan Wallen’s “Don’t Think Jesus” Megan Moroney’s “No Caller ID,”and Luke Combs’ “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma.” That impressive string of No. 1s earned Alexander a Grammy nomination for Songwriter of the Year. “I didn’t even know it was a category,” Alexander says of the relatively new award. “And then to find out that there were three other women nominated, and then one of them being one of my best friends, Jessie Jo Dillon… We’ve worked a lot together and been there through a lot. So yeah, it was just pretty cool.” Despite initial challenges, Alexander’s versatility and passion for storytelling have led to her success in crafting both sensitive ballads and rousing anthems, while challenging stereotypes and earning respect in the music community.
