Shaboozey had a viral moment during the 2025 American Music Awards on Monday (May 26), when he side-eyed Megan Moroney as she read from the teleprompter that the Carter family “basically invented country music.” The “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” hitmaker let out a laugh, before introducing the “very impressive” nominees for the Favorite Country Duo or Group category. Shaboozey took to X on Tuesday to share his response to the incident. “When you uncover the true history of country music, you find a story so powerful that it cannot be erased…” he wrote. “The real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike.” Shaboozey’s response highlights the powerful and often overlooked influence of Black artists on the history of country music, while also bringing to light the impact that Black guitarist Lesley Riddle had on the Carter Family, as he assisted A.P. Carter in gathering “song material” almost 100 years ago. (People)
