A writer for WhiskeyRiff.com recently had a kid, and realized a lot of country songs make for really good lullabies. And since newborns don’t know English………..He came up with a list of, “Ten Country Lullabies for Degenerate Parents.”
1. “The Bottle Let Me Down” by Merle Haggard. He chose it because babies like bottles. But it’s a little upbeat, so it’s best used early in the night.
2. “Whiskey and You” by Chris Stapleton. Another “bottle” song. The lyrics start, “There’s a bottle on the dresser by your ring . . . and it’s empty.”
3. “Don’t Take Your Guns to Town” by Johnny Cash. It’s repetitive, which is good for a lullaby. And he joked that it’s, quote, “helpful to reinforce non-violence at an early age.”
4. “Whiskey Lullaby” by Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss. He basically chose that one for the title. It’s about two lovers who drink themselves to death. But again, your baby doesn’t know what any of that means.
5. “Even if I Wanted To” by Jason Aldean. Mainly because it starts with “I’m on the brink / I can barely think” . . . which sleep-deprived parents can relate to.
The other five songs are: “Cover Me Up” by Jason Isbell . . . “The Grand Tour” by George Jones . . . “Drive (For Daddy Gene)” by Alan Jackson . . .”The Last Thing I Needed First Thing in the Morning”by Willie Nelson . . . and the classic 1961 song “Hello Walls” by Faron Young, which he calls the “Goodnight Moon” of country music.
The CMAs announced the first round of performers, and they include Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, Morgan Wallen, Miranda Lambert, Hardy, Carly Pearce, Jimmie Allen, Kelsea Ballerini, and Zac Brown Band. They also announced that the show will OPEN with a “star-studded” tribute to Loretta Lynn. I’m sure you’ll see several of those performers take part in that. “The 56th Annual CMA Awards” is airing November 9th on ABC.
Scotty McCreery’s wife Gabi gave birth to their first child on Monday. It’s a boy named Merrick Avery McCreery. Scotty posted pics and wrote, “Next to his mother, he is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. Gabi was a total rock star during Avery’s birth. I could not be more proud of her.” Did you notice Scotty called him by his middle name, Avery? They’ll be following a tradition in Gabi’s family. Her father is named Merrick Tre Dugal, but he doesn’t go by his first name.
