Ashley McBryde Changed Her “Standards” to Get an ACM Nomination

Ashley McBryde is a multiple ACM Award nominee going into this weekend’s 56th Annual ACM Awards.

Ashley has nods in the Female Artist of the Year, Album of the Year (Never Will), and Song of the Year (“One Night Standards”) categories.

But did you know “One Night Standards” went through a major change before it became a major hit, and earned the ACM Award nomination.

Originally the track was called “Airport Hotel” — Ashley shares the story of how the song, co-written with Shane McAnally and Nicolette Hayford, changed, “We were just trying to be really honest with each other. We had written this song and originally it was called ‘Airport Hotel,’ and then we decided to revisit that song because there was some real gems in there that we felt needed to be presented, but something was missing. And we thought it was the word ‘Airport Hotel.’ And turns out it was because ‘Airport Hotel’ wasn’t the point at all…it was having a one night stand that was the point.”

Ashley adds that after that realization of what they were really trying to write about the 3 writers needed a second to focus…“We had to walk away from it to give it a second to breathe. When we got back in a room, this time Shane was with us and I joked, ‘You know, hotel rooms . . . they only have one night stand for a reason. They’re one night stand-ers.’ Shane and Nic’s eyes lit up, ‘Did you just say one night standards?’”

Ashley McBryde will be performing the version of “One Night Standards” that everyone now knows and loves, this Sunday, April 18th, on the 56th Annual ACM Awards — catch it live on CBS, 8 PM ET/ 7 PM CT , and available to stream live on Paramount Plus.
