MICHAEL JACKSON’s reputation is pretty much shot at the moment . . . but he’s still got clout with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Michael’s in there twice. He was inducted with the JACKSON 5 in 1997, and as a solo artist in 2001. And the Hall says he’s staying. As far as they’re concerned, he’s in there for his contributions to music . . . which, no matter what else he’s done, were HUGE. Next weekend JANET JACKSON gets inducted. Will she mention Michael in her speech? Probably.
DAVID LETTERMAN was on “Ellen” yesterday. He said, “Here’s the mistake I made: I stayed on TV way too long. It turns out that nobody had the guts to fire me, and I should’ve left 10 years ago. You want to make sure you have some energy to direct toward other things . . .”There’s more to life than [asking celebrities] ‘So tell me about your pet beaver.'” Dave retired in 2015, after 33 years in late night. He’s basically back on TV now, with his Netflix show, “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction”. It’s not as much of a drain as being on TV every night . . . and he does have time to do other stuff, like spending time with his family and working with Habitat for Humanity. A second six-episode season of the show is coming soon.

Even when showbiz is calling. “Somebody showed up at my house yesterday for an interview. I was out changing the cat litter. They were just floored that I was [doing that].” He’s also smart enough to know that his hot streak will cool down. “It could all be gone tomorrow, so [I’m] just trying to enjoy the moment and not get too caught up in why it went to Number One so quick or why people want to hear it so much.” He really feels like he’s the same guy he was in college. He says the only difference is that he has nicer boots, and people recognize him in stores.
