“The Shape of Water” had a big night at the Oscars, winning four awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for GUILLERMO DEL TORO. It was also the first science fiction film to win Best Picture. FRANCES MCDORMAND won Best Actress for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”, and her co-star SAM ROCKWELL got Best Supporting Actor. During her acceptance speech, Frances made all the night’s female nominees stand, and also introduced the world to the phrase “inclusion rider”. If you haven’t Googled it already, like millions of Americans probably did last night, it’s a clause an actor or actress can put in their contract demanding that the cast and crew of a film be more diverse. ALLISON JANNEY won Best Supporting Actress for “I, Tonya”, and GARY OLDMAN won Best Actor for “Darkest Hour”. “Get Out” didn’t get too much love, but JORDAN PEELE became the first African-American to win Best Original Screenplay. Meanwhile, “Lady Bird” and “Mudbound” got snubbed. JIMMY KIMMEL did a good job hosting again, and he even had a unique idea to get people to shorten their acceptance speeches. He offered a JET SKI to the person who took the least time. The winner was Mark Bridges, the costume designer on “Phantom Thread”. He went a mere 36 seconds. There were plenty of political moments . . . like when ASHLEY JUDD, SALMA HAYEK, and ANNABELLA SCIORRA spoke about the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements.
Here’s a rundown of a few other things people are talking about from the Oscars:
- Some people wore ORANGE American flag pins on the red carpet to raise awareness for gun violence in the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida last month.
- Tiffany Haddish wore a cream-colored gown with a black cape that was embroidered in black and gold. The dress is a tribute to her father, who was from the northeast African and passed away last year. “He said one day I’d end up here and if I ever ended up at the Oscars to honor my people. 3. Jordan Peele wore a golden deer antler pin . . . with little red blood spatters . . . on his lapel. It’s a reference to the deer symbolism throughout his movie “Get Out”.
- Helen Mirren took on the role of a ‘Barker’s Beauty’ when she modeled the jet ski that Jimmy Kimmel gave away. And Helen downed a shot of tequila on the red carpet.
- Jennifer Lawrence was photographed climbing over some chairs . . . WHILE holding a glass of wine.
- Whoopi Goldberg in a DRESS? It happened. She was wearing a colorful floral gown with boots, black circular shades, and an assortment of jewelry. She said that the designer wanted her to be comfortable, so he added POCKETS.
- Jane Fonda is 80, and she looked amazing. She wore a white dress that showed off her youthful physique.
- Rita Moreno recycled her 1962 Oscars dress . . . 56 years later. Back then, there wasn’t even a red carpet. She won Best Supporting Actress for her role as Anita in “West Side Story” in 1962.
- Nicole Kidman was cool enough to introduce herself to some people on a Hollywood tour bus . . . before she had her hair and makeup done.
- Oscar-winning “Call Me By Your Name” screenwriter James Ivory wore a shirt that had star Timothée Chalamet’s face on it.
- Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon showed up . . . wearing a BONDAGE-themed tux. A person complimented him on his look, and he said, “Thank you, just something subtle.”
- Emma Stone wore a ‘colorblocked’ suit on the red carpet. It had a bow, and there were a fair amount of other people wearing bows.
- Margot Robbie had a bit of a wardrobe malfunction when one of her dress straps broke. But she somehow got her hands on a sewing kit, and fixed it herself.
